The unrepeatable atmosphere of the modern historical town of Litomyšl can best be felt during a walking tour.
The starting point of our itinerary will be the Renaissance House of the Knights (dům U Rytířů 1), situated at the approximate centre of the nearly 500 meter long Smetana Square (Smetanovo náměstí), and wreathed with a pillared archway. Walking along the square you pass by the Gothic Town Hall Tower 1 and a row of Baroque and Classicist houses. Behind the monument of Bedřich Smetana 3 turn to the left, around Pedagogical High School 4 you reach the Smetana’s House (Smetanův dům 5) and the promenade along the river Loučná 6. Via Komensky Square (Komenského náměstí) you reach Smetana Square again, and turn to the first street on the left. Jiráskova Street will lead you around the monument of Alois Jirásek 7, the Regional Museum 8 and the Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross 9 as far as the Castle precinct 10 – since 1999 listed on the UNESCO World Heritage. There are two optional tours of the Castle available 11, and in addition there are the Castle cellars with a permanent exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek 12, the Municipal Gallery, or the apartment of birth of Bedřich Smetana 13. The Renaissance Castle is only a few steps away from newly reconstructed Monastery Gardens (Klášterní zahrady 14), which offer artmoneum – Josef Váchal Museum (Museum Josefa Váchala 15). Around the Church of the Raising of the Holy Cross 16 you reach Šanta Square (Šantovo náměstí) followed by Toulovec Square (Toulovcovo náměstí) with the oldest sacral building in the city – the Church of the Sending Out of Apostles 18. Along Váchal Lane (Váchalova ulička 19) you finally get back to Smetana Square (Smetanovo náměstí).
